Tioga Falls, located on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, is a 130-foot
high double cascade flowing down the side of Muldraugh Hill. At the top of
the falls is the former site of the historic Tioga Falls Hotel, which was a
popular retreat for wealthy southerners trying to escape the deep-south
malaria epidemics in the 1800s. All that remains of the hotel now are
remnants of a dam at the falls created to provide a swimming pool for hotel
guests. The falls is reached by hiking one mile along a trail that follows a
portion of the old Louisville & Nashville Turnpike, completed in 1838, that
was the major north-south route for this area.
